Barnes, John Mahlon; born Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 22, 1866; held many posts within Cigarmakers International Union; member of Socialist Labor Party and later of Socialist Party; critic and antagonist of Samuel Gompers; director of American Freedom Foundation and business manager of New Day; died Washington, D.C., 1934. Letter dated 1898 contains the following prediction: "Dear Sir: Even as Feudalism vanished before Capitalism, so will Capitalism be vanished by Socialism for humanity and civilization demand it."
